Handwriting experts at the Joseph Smith Paper have noted that this document has irregularities and deviations from the way JS usually wrote. Although the Geauga County, Ohio, marriage record notes the receipt of several certificates of marriages JS performed in 1836 and 1837, none of the original certificates (except for this photocopy) are extant. Unfortunately, the photocopy includes only the front of the certificate; the back may include filing notations from a county clerk. It is possible this certificate is authentic but because of the lack of information regarding the existing photocopy, it cannot be authenticated conclusively.
