On 8 March 1845, Bullock reached page 912 in volume C-1 of JS’s manuscript history. Thereafter, Bullock adopted the practice of leaving pages blank where he intended to return at a later date to inscribe source documents. Bullock likely copied Thompson’s letter on pages 937–939 sometime between late March and 3 July 1845, during which time he regularly noted filling in blank pages from JS Letterbook 2 and other sources.
